INTRODUCTION TO DRILLING Course

Drilling a well into a potential oil accumulation still remains the only technology available today to prove and produce hydrocarbon reserves. From this we can perceive the importance of drilling engineering in the world´s daily life.

Drilling safely and economically into a formation that is hiding thousands of meters underground is a challenging task. As such the drilling engineer needs to be well prepared and have a good understanding of several subjects in different areas of the science (geosciences, physics, mathematics, chemistry, hydraulics, economics, HSE,….) to properly be able to face up to the challenge.

COURSE DURATION: 1 day

LEVEL: Foundation

DESIGNED FOR YOU, IF YOU ARE...

  • Petroleum engineer,

  • Operation engineer

HOW WE BUILD YOUR CONFIDENCE

  • Preferably the course would be taught face-to-face, supported by a power-point presentation.

THE BENEFITS FROM ATTENDING

The objectives of this course are to familiarize the student with all the drilling engineering workflow, from planning to well delivery, including drilling costs and notions of health, safety and environment

By the end of the course, you will feel confident in your understanding of:

  • The importance of well drilling for the safe and economical production of hydrocarbons and the need for a good knowledge of associated disciplines (licensing, exploration, contracts, organization charts, man power, field abandonment, …)

TOPICS

  • Drilling: History and Its Importance.

  • Types of Rigs,

  • Sequences of Operations.

INSTRUCTOR:

Carlos Alves was born in Lisbon, Portugal (1950). He got a Mining Engineer degree from the University of Luanda, Angola (1973), and a Master of Science degree from Colorado School of Mines, USA (1977). In 1978 he joined Petrangol (the Angolan subsidiary of the Belgian oil company, Petrofina) in Luanda, Angola. For two years he was the well site drilling engineer on 4 drilling/workover rigs working onshore. After, he became responsible for an oil field in northern Angola. In 1983 he was sent to work as secondee in the drilling department of Philips Petroleum Company in the North Sea (Ekofisk area). In 1986 he was transferred back to Angola in charge of the Drilling Department of Fina Petróleos de Angola. From 1988 to end of 1990 he was Technical Director at Zairep (Zairian subsidiary of Petrofina). From 1991 to mid-1995 he was responsible for the Drilling and Production activities of Fina Italiana (Italian subsidiary of Petrofina). Then he was transferred to Angola as Chairman and CEO of Fina Petróleos de Angola. In1998 Total merged with Elf and then with Petrofina. With the new organization Carlos was put in charge of all the onshore operations of TOTAL in Angola. In the beginning of 2000, he decided to quit TOTAL and joined GALP Energia (Portuguese oil company) as General Manager of the Exploration and Production Department. Due to the success of the exploration activities in Brazil (basically the pre-salt discoveries in the deep waters of the Santos Basin) he was appointed in 2011 as CEO of Petrogal Brazil, based in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, until his retirement in 2015.

At the request of the Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) in Lisbon, he taught the course of “Drilling and Completion” to the Master students in Petroleum Engineering from 2018 till 2020.
