DRILLING ENGINEERING PRINCIPLES Course

The course will address the history of drilling; the well architecture for exploration, appraisal and development program;, the description of on-offshore rigs; main rig components(hoisting, rotary, circulation); the drill string ( components and design);bits (types, selection and hydraulic optimization);the drilling fluids(functions, additives, rheology, hydraulics); casings/liners( properties and design); wellheads; cementing (cement types and additives);  well control (equipment and methods); introduction to completion and plug and abandonment operations  and the importance of HSE policies.

COURSE DURATION: 4 days

LEVEL: Skill

DESIGNED FOR YOU, IF YOU ARE...

  • Drilling engineers

  • Drilling superintendents

  • Well site supervisors.

HOW WE BUILD YOUR CONFIDENCE

  • The course is very interactive and will give a comprehensive review about the main aspects involved in the drilling of a well, supported by real examples, the equipment used and the conduction of the operations.

THE BENEFITS FROM ATTENDING

  • The attendants will get a good knowledge about the different phases of the drilling operations, the importance of well control equipment and the implementation of good HSE practices.

BY THE END OF THE COURSE, YOU WILL FEEL CONFIDENT IN YOUR UNDERSTANDING ABOUT:

  • The main equipment required to drill a well, how they operate, how to design drill strings, casings and how select the bit and mud system most suitable for a given formation. They will also learn how to proceed if it becomes necessary to control the well

INSTRUCTOR:

Carlos Alves was born in Lisbon, Portugal (1950). He got a Mining Engineer degree from the University of Luanda, Angola (1973), and a Master of Science degree from Colorado School of Mines, USA (1977). In 1978 he joined Petrangol (the Angolan subsidiary of the Belgian oil company, Petrofina) in Luanda, Angola. For two years he was the well site drilling engineer on 4 drilling/workover rigs working onshore. After, he became responsible for an oil field in northern Angola. In 1983 he was sent to work as secondee in the drilling department of Philips Petroleum Company in the North Sea (Ekofisk area). In 1986 he was transferred back to Angola in charge of the Drilling Department of Fina Petróleos de Angola. From 1988 to end of 1990 he was Technical Director at Zairep (Zairian subsidiary of Petrofina). From 1991 to mid-1995 he was responsible for the Drilling and Production activities of Fina Italiana (Italian subsidiary of Petrofina). Then he was transferred to Angola as Chairman and CEO of Fina Petróleos de Angola. In1998 Total merged with Elf and then with Petrofina. With the new organization Carlos was put in charge of all the onshore operations of TOTAL in Angola. In the beginning of 2000, he decided to quit TOTAL and joined GALP Energia (Portuguese oil company) as General Manager of the Exploration and Production Department. Due to the success of the exploration activities in Brazil (basically the pre-salt discoveries in the deep waters of the Santos Basin) he was appointed in 2011 as CEO of Petrogal Brazil, based in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, until his retirement in 2015.

At the request of the Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) in Lisbon, he taught the course “Drilling and Completion” to the Master students in Petroleum Engineering from 2018 till 2020.
