DRILL BITS AND HYDRAULICS Course

A comprehensive overview of the different types of bits (fixed cutter, roller cones, hybrids). Fundamentals of bit design and selection. Drilling bit performance and evaluation. The IADC code for bit selection and grading. Factors affecting the rate of penetration and optimization of the penetration rate. Nozzles, pressure losses across the bit and hydraulic efficiency.

COURSE DURATION:  2 days

LEVEL:  Skill

DESIGNED FOR YOU, IF YOU ARE...

  • Drilling engineer

  • Petroleum engineer.

HOW WE BUILD YOUR CONFIDENCE

  • .Preferably the course will be taught face-to- face, supported by a power point presentation and illustrated with
    several practical problems.

THE BENEFITS FROM ATTENDING

The attendants will get a good knowledge about the different types of drilling bits used in drilling operations, how to select the most suitable bit for different lithologies, how to optimize penetration rates, select bit nozzles for increased hydraulic efficiency; calculate the bit cost/foot.

By the end of the course you will feel confident in your understanding of:

  • The different types of drilling bits, how to select them and how to optimize the penetration rate.

TOPICS

  • Types of bits, bit design, selection, performance and evaluation. The IADC code for bit selection and grading. Rate of penetration and optimization. Nozzles, pressure losses and hydraulic efficiency.

INSTRUCTOR:

Carlos Alves was born in Lisbon, Portugal (1950). He got a Mining Engineer degree from the University of Luanda, Angola (1973), and a Master of Science degree from Colorado School of Mines, USA (1977). In 1978 he joined Petrangol (the Angolan subsidiary of the Belgian oil company, Petrofina) in Luanda, Angola. For two years he was the well site drilling engineer on 4 drilling/workover rigs working onshore. After, he became responsible for an oil field in northern Angola. In 1983 he was sent to work as secondee in the drilling department of Philips Petroleum Company in the North Sea (Ekofisk area). In 1986 he was transferred back to Angola in charge of the Drilling Department of Fina Petróleos de Angola. From 1988 to end of 1990 he was Technical Director at Zairep (Zairian subsidiary of Petrofina). From 1991 to mid-1995 he was responsible for the Drilling and Production activities of Fina Italiana (Italian subsidiary of Petrofina). Then he was transferred to Angola as Chairman and CEO of Fina Petróleos de Angola. In1998 Total merged with Elf and then with Petrofina. With the new organization Carlos was put in charge of all the onshore operations of TOTAL in Angola. In the beginning of 2000, he decided to quit TOTAL and joined GALP Energia (Portuguese oil company) as General Manager of the Exploration and Production Department. Due to the success of the exploration activities in Brazil (basically the pre-salt discoveries in the deep waters of the Santos Basin) he was appointed in 2011 as CEO of Petrogal Brazil, based in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, until his retirement in 2015.

At the request of the Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) in Lisbon, he taught the course of “Drilling and Completion” to the Master students in Petroleum Engineering from 2018 till 2020.
